With the advent of the iPhone, and now the iPad, there are a plethora of “apps” that you didn’t even know you needed before the smartphone arrived on the scene. You’ve heard the ubiquitous statement “There’s an app for that”, but the reality is that there really are many applications that can make our life and work easier with just a swipe and a tap. We recently polled our staff to discover what apps they use on a regular basis in their projects and processes.
These are just a few of the various apps that high-tech BNIM-ers are using on-the-go:
Architectural Apps
- Evernotes: Users like this note-taking app for capturing ideas, tracking changes and collaboration. (Free, or Premium for $5.00 per month)
- Measures Lite: Great for quick conversions, this is a great unit converter (Free)
- Days Between Dates: Track your project milestones with this app that calculates the number of days between any two dates you choose. (Free)
- Expensify: Making your expense report just got that much easier with this app that can scan receipts, create expense reports, sync to credit cards to track purchases, etc. (Free)
- Leafsnap: Snap a photo of that unidentified leaf and the app will identify the species for you. (Free)
- Sketchbook Pro: Thare are multiple uses for this Autodesk drawing app. It offers sketching at your fingertips — and some have used it to take photos and then write field notes directly on the photos. (Free)
- GoogleTranslate: Translate your typed or spoken text/word into many different languages. (Free)
- Dragon Dictation: Remain hands free. Speak into your phone and this app will translate spoken word into text that you can email, text, paste, etc. (Free)
- HDR photo: This app creates high dynamic range photos created by combining automatically merging three separate photos. ($1.99)
- CamScanner: Use your camera phone to snap a photo and camscanner translates the photo to a PDF document. ($4.99)
- uPunchit+: Use this app to create a punch list from images, pdfs, etc. from the ipad ($2.99)
- uSketchit+: Yet another sketching program. ($2.99)
- uScaleit: Estimate distances to scale off of google maps. ($2.99)
- Cubitz: Cubits lets you download, view and save 3D models from Google 3D Warehouse — or load your own KMZ files exported from SketchUp. ($4.99)

- Good Guide: Helps you find safe, healthy and sustainable products while you shop. (Free)
- GBIG Analyst: This App from USGBC can navigate a local map and display nearby LEED-certified buildings. You can view select performance metrics for those buildings and compare buildings to others across the region based on LEED credit achievement. (Free)
- GBIG Explorer: Using GBIG Explorer 1.0, you can explore over 250 green buildings in the Chicago area that have been LEED certified by the US Green Building Council. (Free)
- Around Me: Quickly find information about your surroundings. (Free)
- Seafood Watch: Up-to-date recommendations for sustainable seafood choices from Monterey Bay Aquarium. (Free)
- NPR Station Finder: Gotta have your NPR? This searches current location for NPR stations. (Free)
- PBS: If you have a wifi connection, you can instantly watch PBS television programs on your device through this app. (Free)
