Work/Life Series: Staycation

Those in the architecture field – or any field for that matter, are in a constant struggle to find the perfect balance between work life and non-work life.

Juggling countless deadlines, raising a family, keeping up with community events and friends, etc. – how do we find time to squeeze it all in? Thankfully, we have an array of bloggers to turn to, including our own Amy Slattery – a hardworking architect and mother of two. She frequently contributes to the AIA Knowledge Bank on work/life issues. Check out an excerpt of her adventures below!

Yet again I get to write at an odd hour. On my day off. My husband, Sean (also an architect) and I have decided to take the trendy "staycation" this week. We're going to take the kids to daycare and chill at home, rent movies, have wine with lunch, and probably repaint the porch. Of course we still have some work-ish things to do. So I'm starting my week off by updating the AIA Knowledge Net WIA Community. Why? Because I think it's cool. Next, I have a site visit at 8:30 this morning for a final review of the Proscenium theater ceiling at the Kauffman Center. They're taking the scaffolding down this afternoon and because I took a "staycation" and am still in town...well, it'll be cool to see the final touches.

Later this week I'm going to my KC CREW programs committee meeting. Again, work-related but I enjoy networking and there are always good leads and project discussions going on. Got to stay on top of things. And finally Friday I'm back on site giving a tour to a young friend of ours. She's aspiring to be an architect, and I think we need all the lady-architects we can get. I'm also trying to finally read Sarah Susanka's "Not So Big Life". It's been on my bedside table for two years. Wish me luck!
Here's to the "staycation. Next year I'm saving up for airfare!
