Dan graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor in Architecture. He also has a major in environmental studies and a minor in digital media, and he is a LEED Green Associate.

David Immenschuh’s understanding of interiors, as well as buildings, has led the firm in truly integrated solutions that serve user needs and comfort. His leadership in interior design changed the way architects select materials. The interiors group works with vendors and product representatives to educate them on sustainable design as it relates to interiors and FF&E. Under his direction, the interiors department collected information on materials in regards to off-gassing, recycled content, flexibility, longevity, economic benefit, all leading to healthier workplaces.

 

As the firm sets new standards in highly integrated design, Immenschuh has done in-depth exploration on moveable wall partition systems as they relate to the built environment. These studies included detailed questions of the manufacturers and plant visits to assist the team in selecting the best products possible for our client's goals.

 

David is an avid supporter of the fine arts community. He has helped several clients including H&R Block, CBIZ and Blue Cross Blue Shield to develop their art collections from well-known and emerging artists, locally and nationally.

 

Some of his most representative projects in space planning, programming and design include the School of Nursing and Student Community Center at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Robert D. O'Byrne & Associates, Gateway 2000, the award-winning H&R Block World Headquarters, Universal Press Syndicate, Investors Fiduciary Trust Corporation (IFTC)/State Street, Citicorp Credit Services Buildings I & II, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City, Shook Hardy & Bacon law offices and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Expansion Project.

Nadav Bittan received a Master of Architecture from Kansas State University. While at KSU, Nadav was a mentor and college ambassador. Since joining BNIM, Nadav has been an integral team member for a renovation and expansion at Seaton Hall at his alma mater and has assisted on the Price Gilbert - Crosland Tower Renewal at Georgia Institute of Technology. Nadav has experience working on projects for all scales, cultures, and climates.

Kemet excels in graphic design, event facilitation, branding, and public speaking.

Prior to joining BNIM, Josh worked on a wide variety of project types that includes a LEED Platinum carbon neutral fire station in Dallas that is helping to establish future city project delivery requirements; work for Missouri State University; Stoutland Schools Addition & Renovation; and USGBC North Texas Green Building Resource Center.

As BNIM’s Director of Design, Steve McDowell is an innovator, and his workplace is a laboratory for exploring ideas related to site, environment and technical investigation. He believes in a lively exchange of thoughts to stimulate exploration and sustain innovation. Steve maintains that good design is about people–their health, productivity and lifting the human spirit through design. His work is setting new standards in high performance design with projects such as The Omega Center for Sustainable Living in Rhinebeck, NY; Qualcomm Building AY in San Diego, CA; and the Henry W. Bloch Executive Hall for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Under his leadership, BNIM recieved the American Institute of Architects Firm Award in 2011.

Rod’s body of work includes a diverse variety of project types for clients within both the private and public sectors. Well established as a leader in design, Rod’s work has been included in several traveling exhibitions, and he has lectured widely. In 2009, Bob received a Heinz Award from Theresa Heinz and the Heinz Family Foundation for his role in promoting green building design and for his commitment and action towards restoring social, economic and environmental vitality to America’s communities through sustainable architecture and planning. Among his contributions to his industry, Bob is the founding chairman of the American Institute of Architects’ National Committee on the Environment (AIA / COTE) and was also instrumental in the formation of the US Green Building Council and its LEED rating system.

Her recent work includes one of the first Living Buildings in the world for the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY, and a net-zero community redevelopment in Montreal, Quebec.

Tom Nelson is a founding principal of BNIM. In this role and in his personal time, Tom has continuously been involved in civic affairs, particularly those affecting the physical shape of Kansas City. Tom’s commitment to his city is validated by the wide variety of professional and civic activities he has led among peers and urban planners. He was the founder of the AIA KC Chapter Urban Design Committee, the former Chairman of the Kansas City Plan Commission, and past Chairman of the Downtown Council Land Use Committee, the MARC Urban Core Growth Strategies Committee and the Chamber of Commerce Light Rail Committee. At a national level, in 2009 Tom completed a three-year term as regional director for the national chapter of the AIA. Throughout his career, Tom has been widely recognized and honored for his design skill and is regarded for his judgment in urban issues and urban design.

Craig Scranton directs BNIM’s Government practice area. As a project manager, he is particularly adept at working with complex design and management teams, which require special organizational attention and coordination. Having served as project manager for some of BNIM's most complex projects, he has developed an expertise in the design of office buildings and parking facilities. Craig recently competed the GSA’s Internal Revenue Service Kansas City Campus, a 1,000,000 sq. ft. facility on a 27-acres site in Kansas City’s urban core. He was part of the design team for the David & Lucile Packard Foundation in Los Altos, California, where he was instrumental in developing a sustainability matrix. The Packard Matrix, as it became known, continues to help the architectural and construction industries understand how varied levels of sustainable design can impact the environment and business costs throughout the life of a building, beginning with initial construction.

Kevin Nordmeyer brings more than 20 years of highly relevant leadership and design experience to the profession. Prior to joining BNIM, Kevin served as director of the Iowa Energy Center, a research center at Iowa State University with a mission to conduct and sponsor research, education and demonstration projects focused on energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. Nordmeyer was the Founding Chair of the United States Green Building Council-Iowa Chapter and has served on several boards and commissions including the Iowa Environmental Council, AIA Iowa and the Iowa Commission on Energy Efficiency Standards and Practices. Kevin has also served as a lecturer in the College of Design at Iowa State University since 2003, where he focused on sustainable design education.

Matthew Porreca

Matthew leads BNIM’s California presence from the firm's office in San Diego, CA. Matthew served as project architect for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Addition and Renovation. The building was named Time Magazine’s “Building of the Year” in 2007 along with receiving the national AIA Honor Award. Matthew recently performed a similar role on the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, MO. His involvement with large, complex projects has allowed him to hone his ability to understand and solve challenging project issues related to functional design, technical integration, long-range scheduling and project needs management. Additionally, his experience with smaller projects has shaped the way he responds effectively to budgetary and scheduling conditions. He is currently working on Qualcomm Building AY and AZ at Qualcomm's Pacific Center Campus near San Diego, CA.

He is a curtain wall and glazing specialist due to his project expertise, which includes his role as Senior Project Architect on the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Expansion and Renovation team. His meticulous method of preparation, technical expertise and boundless passion for the built environment contribute to his reputation as a respected and extremely proficient architect. Sarofim Research Building at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Erik Heitman is a Project Architect and Project Manager in BNIM's Kansas City office. Erik played a major role in the renovations and additions to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, making significant contributions toward the design and project management of the museum’s Adelaide Cobb-Ward Sculpture Hall, Sarah & Landon Rowland American Art Galleries, American Indian Art Galleries, and Susan B. and Mark A. Susz Galleries. In addition, Erik provided design support on the Bloch Building Addition and the Ford Learning Center. Other project experience includes Westport Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, Missouri and Plaza Colonnade in Kansas City, Missouri.

Phaedra is a licensed architect and an associate at BNIM Architects. She has a Bachelors of Architecture from Iowa State University. Her experience as a consultant for LEED compliance and policy implementation, materials selection and specification, sustainable building and infrastructure design is an extention of her belief in a holistic view of sustainability. She has worked on many of BNIM's most sustainable projects including the School of Nursing, University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston; the David and Lucile Packard Foundation Sustainability Matrix and Report in Los Altos; the Lewis and Clark State Office Building, in Jefferson City; The Kansas City Regional By-Product Synergy Initiative. Most recently she is working with the USGBC to develop a conceptual tool called REGEN, intended to help designers and community leaders who are working with an regenerative approach to design and planning.

He is adept with 3D visualization techniques to support design efforts and for utilization in vision and fundraising documents. He played a key role in numerous early stage master planning and conceptual design projects, including the University of Kansas NIST Construction Grant, which received a $12.3 million dollar federal grant. Kristin is an experienced Project Architect with flexible skills which make her a valuable team resource to project teams at BNIM. She was a core member of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art team, where she generated construction documents for the building’s public spaces and led intense coordination efforts with a multitude of engineers for the nearly 50,000 square feet of new gallery space in the Bloch Building. She was the Project Architect for the Kansas City Power & Light Headquarters, a 200,000 square foot project pursuing LEED Gold certification. Kristin holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Kansas and is a registered architect in the state of Missouri.

Laura Pastine, AIA LEED AP, is a Senior Design Architect with 17 years of experience in architecture and sustainability focused on developing projects of high design excellence benefiting both built and unbuilt environments.  With a dedication to community architecture, institutions, creative workplaces and cultural projects, Laura is devoted to crafting memorable spaces in the public realm.  Laura’s expertise in experience-based design has expanded her practice into arts spaces and exhibition design, most recently completing the Nelson-Atkin’s Museum of Art’s Plains Indians – Artists of Earth and Sky feature exhibition. 

Before re-joining BNIM, Laura founded an architectural practice that used contemporary design and constructed solutions for small businesses and non-profits, balancing budget and client needs to deliver high-impact spaces through a discovery-based design and lean production process. In the past, she has served as a team member for the Kiowa County Schools project, the Greensburg Business Incubator and the Egyptian Gallery at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.

Sarah Hirsch

Sarah has worked on a wide variety of project types with a diverse range of clients including governmental, corporate, institutional, retail and residential. She focuses primarily on specification writing and brings to each project a vast knowledge of materials and systems. Many of her projects focus on integrating sustainable design including multiple building designed to achieve Living Building Status. Sarah has played a key role in developing BNIM's "green" master specification and has consulted on a number of projects assisting other firms to provide LEED specifications.

Under her direction, the firm's interiors group conducts important work focused on client and industry leadership in many areas including BNIM’s proprietary Vision-driven design process, defining the workplace of the future and creating vibrant environments that address sustainable design and human factors such as health, happiness and productivity — and the measurement the benefits related to these factors. She recently completed work on the much-anticipated Henry W. Bloch Executive Hall for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, which opened in August 2013.

Kyle is very active in the architecture community in Kansas City, being a part of the American Institute of Architects, Young Architects Forum, and USGBC Emerging Professionals. He is currently working on Qualcomm's Pacific Center Campus, and has pulled project permits ahead of schedule at every critical milestone. His work as Assistant Vice President of Architecture and Planning at CCDC included developing local, state and federal green building and energy policy. In addition to BNIM, Vladimir is the Director of the Kansas City Design Center, an academic urban design program that centers on building synergetic relations between professional and civic communities and academia.

Janelle Kimsey is an administrative assistant for the Landscape and Planning studio in BNIM’s Kansas City office. She has a Masters of Interior Architecture and Product Design from Kansas State University. Previously, Janelle has worked at the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, where she wrote grants for artist workshops, gave tours, and created after-school programs for kids. She has also volunteered for Project Change.

Catherine Callaway

Catherine Callaway is a Project Architect in BNIM's Houston office. Catherine has worked on the design, technical documentation, and LEED certification of a number of institutional, corporate and educational facilities. Recent work has included a new Energy Technology Center for Tarrant County College District, which has goals of LEED Platinum and net zero energy; Westside Senior Education Center; the new Water Works Education Center; and the renovation of the International Coffee Building.

 

Catherine received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Davidson College and a Master of Architecture from The University of Houston. She is an active member of her professional community and has been a contributing member of the Gulf Coast Green Conference and the Rice Design Alliance.

Rohn Grothenhuis is an experienced Project Architect whose work spans a variety of project types and scales. His project experience includes the Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center; Sea Life Aquarium, Crown Center; Christopher Elbow Chocolates; renovations to the Westin Hotel at Crown Center; Polsinelli Law Offices in Washington, DC, and Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. 

 

Rohn has a Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University, where he remains active on the professional advisory board. He also serves on the stream team with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and as a Boy Scout Troop Leader.

Marcia Krupich

Marcia Krupich is the long-standing executive assistant to BNIM Principals Steve McDowell, Casey Cassias and Bob Berkebile. She also serves as the Director of the Administrative Studio and, along with her studio, is responsible for the day-to-day administrative needs of the firm. Her background in supporting architectural firms, along with her invaluable understanding of the inner workings of BNIM, keep things organized and running smoothly.

Hans Nettelblad directs BNIM’s Existing Building sector, which retools and repositions existing buildings to perform better and provide healthier environments for workers. Hans understands how key renovation strategies can help building owners and developers increase market positioning. In 2007, Governor Kathleen Sebelius appointed Hans to the Kansas Energy Council, an expert panel that encourages energy-related production, research and development, conservation and other energy-related economic development. His experience serving as project architect for ongoing projects at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, in addition to leading several projects in the rebuilding of Greensburg, KS led to him being named The American Institute of Architects’ Kansas City Chapter “Architect of the Year” in 2008.

Jon Sloan is a licensed Architect in BNIM's Des Moines office. To his projects, Jon brings experience leading and documenting complex projects with construction budgets in excess of $50 million. Emily Kruse is a member of the interiors studio in BNIM’s Kansas City office. She has a Masters in Interior Architecture and Product Design from Kansas State University. While at KSU, Emily was a student mentor, a member of Women in Design, and on the staff of KSU’s Oz Journal. Her personal philosophy when it comes to thoughtful design emphasizes the role that psychology can play. Understanding what people do and feel on a daily basis allows her to create healthy, productive, and inspiring spaces.

Ryan Camp is a Project Architect in BNIM's Kansas City office. In this role, Ryan has served as an integral team member for many of BNIM's significant projects, including the new Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University, two new, high-performance buildings at Qualcomm's Pacific Center Campus in San Diego, and several highly sustainable projects at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia.

Ryan received his a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arkansas.

Gunnar Hand

Gunnar Hand is a Certified Planner and a member of BNIM's nationally recognized Planning and Landscape studio. Gunnar has applied experience in demographic and data analysis, community consensus building, public outreach, policy and design guideline development, city and regional planning best practices, and creating comprehensive plans of action. His most recent work at BNIM has focused on a citywide initiative to establish a Streetcar network in Kansas City, Missouri.

Gunnar received a Master of Science for City and Regional Planning as well as a Certificate in Physical Planning/Urban Design from Pratt Institute. He also earned a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Colorado.
 

Jason Kruse

Jason Kruse is a design team member in BNIM's Des Moines office. Jason's experience includes a collaborative background centered on sustainable design and technologies. Recent work includes a Campus Master plan for AIB College of Business; a new South Annex for Seamans Center for the Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa; and a new Psychology and Learning Center at the University of Iowa.

Jim is Director of Landscape Architecture services for BNIM. A land-use planner and landscape architect, he is a versatile leader with project responsibilities ranging from site programming and analysis to master planning, from needs assessment to site design, construction documents and construction administration. His expertise in stormwater management, best management practice (BMP) design and urban planning, as well as in the design of environmentally sensitive landscapes, led to BNIM receiving a grant from the U.S. Green Building Council to study BMPs for on-site stormwater management.

Aaron Ross is a Landscape Architect and serves as the Director of Design for Landscape Architecture at BNIM. Aaron is committed to the idea that all good design solutions are rooted in sustainable ideas. His interest in sustainable design and urban redevelopment projects initially led him to BNIM, where he has collaborated on many urban design projects including EPA Greening America’s Capitals - Jefferson City, MO, Greater Downtown Area Plan for Kansas City, MO; Make It Right Eco-Playground in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward; and Applebee’s International Support Center.

Aaron holds a Bachelor in Landscape Architecture from the College of Architecture Planning and Design at Kansas State University.

Elif Tinney

Elif Tinney serves as Co-Director of Design for Interiors. She is leading the firm’s interiors work on projects such as Qualcomm’s Pacific Center Campus from BNIM’s office in San Diego, CA. Elif believes that carrying the vision of the client through all the stages of design is critical and that a successful design solution is defined by the integration of sustainable concepts with cost effective and beautiful design solutions. Elif recently led BNIM’s collaboration with the American Institute of Architects and Hanley Wood on a project that defined the office of the future, which became known as the “Open Source Office.” The concept was featured at the 2012 AIA National Convention.
