Happy 90th Birthday, Tom!
We are wishing a very happy birthday to BNIM’s founding principal, Tom Nelson!
Architect, planner, practice leader, community builder, mentor, collaborator, advocate, friend; these are just a handful of words to describe Tom and the profound impact he has had on all of us at BNIM and beyond.
From the design of One Kansas City Place, the Kansas City Zoo World Gate Plaza, Bartle Hall, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Bloch Building, to the recently completed Kirk Family YMCA, Tom’s remarkable work as an architect and planner has spanned Kansas City’s skyline and neighborhoods, enhancing the built and natural environments of our community. By designing buildings that are both functional and beautiful, he has helped to create a sense of civic pride and connection among Kansas City residents.
Tom has positively shaped the urban fabric of Kansas City, transformed our practice and community, and inspired generations of architects and civic leaders.
It’s a joy to celebrate you Tom. Cheers to 90 years!

For 70 of your 90 years you have been my North Star, my gyroscope, in Lawrence, London, Kansas City and beyond. I can’t find the right words but the Zulu word Ubuntu “I am because you are” comes close, or at the firm/community scale, “We are because you are.”
