AN’s Facades+ Kansas City Conference will be co-chaired by BNIM in July 2025

The Architect’s Newspaper Facades+ Kansas City Conference will take place this July 22, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri, co-chaired by BNIM Principals James Pfeiffer and Joyce Raybuck, alongside BNIM’s Carleigh Pope, John Collier, and Josh Harrold who will be moderating and presenting sessions throughout the event.

The conference will include presentations on projects with iconic and innovative facade design, including housing, higher education, adaptive reuse, and sports design, across Kansas City region and beyond. Presentations will feature the latest in hybrid mass timber, sustainable design, new materials, cutting edge curtainwall detailing, and high-performance building enclosures.

BNIM will present “Constraints as Opportunity: Developing a Problem-Solving Ecosystem for Facade Design Excellence.” This presentation session will explore prioritizing a problem-solving ecosystem to navigate constraints as opportunities and advocate for design excellence. Through the lens of AIA’s framework for design excellence, BNIM Architects Joyce Raybuck, John Collier, and Josh Harrold will present three project case studies demonstrating high-performance facade design that successfully addresses challenges of climate, site, program, and community context. Presenters will share lessons learned and key strategies in implementing technical solutions for environmental and programmatic challenges; advocating for facade design excellence in client collaboration; and designing facades in dialogue with community context and urban conditions.

About BNIM’s Co-Chairs, Presenters, and Moderators

With 20 years in the profession, Joyce Raybuck is a passionate, collaborative design leader and Principal at BNIM, who produces research informed, human-centered projects from concept through construction. Clients gain value through her national and international expertise on innovative projects in higher education, embassy design, workplace design, and urban development. Alongside her design leadership, Joyce serves as an advocate for sustainable policy in Kansas City, supporting resolutions to implement positive change through climate action and community health and resiliency.

James Pfeiffer is an award-winning designer, creative collaborator, and Principal at BNIM whose core strengths are centered around design, culture, and people. Adept at many roles in all phases of design, he is a rare designer who moves seamlessly through all phases, grasping the rigor and innovation of strong concept development to the precision required in construction documentation and administration. In his nearly three decades in the architectural profession, James’s projects have set new standards in human-purposed and high-performance design.

John Collier brings 25 years of professional architectural experience to his role as Associate Principal at BNIM. John has served as Project Architect on many projects at BNIM, and he is experienced is leading all project aspects, from programming and design to production and implementation and construction administration. John was a core team member for the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, MO, the Henry W. Bloch Executive Hall for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Missouri – Kansas City, and most recently, the new Las Vegas Downtown Civic Center and Plaza.

Carleigh Pope is an Associate and architect in BNIM’s Des Moines studio. Following her studies at Kansas State University where she completed her Master of Architecture, Carleigh has contributed to several significant projects at BNIM, including the design for an adaptive reuse and redevelopment of former Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA, and the addition and renovation to Blunt Hall, a research and lab science building at the heart of Missouri State University campus. Carleigh embraces BNIM’s core purpose and values, and she is a champion for growing diversity in the field of architecture, leading with a spirit of empathy and a determination to shape the AEC industry.

Josh Harrold is a Principal at BNIM with nearly two decades of experience creating a body of work that has earned regional and national recognition. His practice bridges architecture, planning, and cultural storytelling to deepen the relationship between people and place. Josh brings a regionalist’s sensibility and a modernist’s approach to every endeavor, shaping spaces as living biographies of the communities they serve. Most recently, Josh has applied this approach to transformative projects including Missouri State University’s Blunt Hall Renovation and Addition, the Springfield Art Museum and Master Plan, the adaptive reuse of the former Lyric Theatre in Downtown Kansas City into the Kirk Family YMCA, and the Kansas City International Airport Parking Garage.
