BNIM-designed New North Kansas City High School Breaks Ground - “Demo Day” Kicks Off Major Renovations

(North Kansas City, Mo.) May 30, 2017 – On Wednesday, May 31, at 3 PM BNIM will participate in thegroundbreakingfor the new North Kansas City High School. The event, called Demo Day, will be less about thegroundand more about thebreakingas demolition of the existing structure commences. The event will signify the beginning of $60 million in renovations and new construction for North Kansas City High School, the oldest school in the North Kansas City School District.

The 91-year-old school first opened its doors in 1926 and has served generations of students in the Northland. The new North Kansas City High School will allow this historic facility to continue to meet the needs of students for another 90+ years. Currently, 1460 students attend NKCHS. When the renovations are complete in the fall of 2019, the school will accommodate 1650 students.

The $60 million dollar renovation will position North Kansas City High School for the next generation of students.

The new NKCHS will honor the past by retaining the original main building, Old Main, and the historic football field with its surrounding majestic wallone of the last WPA (Works Progress Administration) projects of the Great Depression. Old Main will see significant renovation inside, but the exterior will remain the same. The new additions will offer students a state of the art educational learning space. There will be new classrooms built, a fine arts center with new band and choir rooms added, new indoor athletic and common areas will be created as well as an up-to-date library media center.

Funding for renovations is part of a $114 million bond passed by voters in August of 2016.
