BNIM presents at SCUP North Central 2022 Regional Conference: Pragmatic Placemaking for Transformational Skilled Worker Training

At the SCUP North Central 2022 Regional Conference, BNIM will present a case study of Metropolitan Community College (MCC)'s Blue River East building, home to the Great Plains OSHA Education Center and specialized skills training programs including CDL, Forklift, Linework, and Logistics. This educational session entitled Pragmatic Placemaking for Transformational Skilled Worker Training will address the challenges facing in-demand industries and academic workforce training programs, such as the skills shortage, community and site impact, and pragmatic design solutions. Project leaders Jeremy Kahm, AIA, and Dan Johnson, AIA, will present their insight and experience alongside MCC-Kansas City Chief Facilities Officer, Jeff Ullmann, and MCC-Kansas City President, Thomas W. Meyer, Ph.D. The session will take place on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, 8:30 a.m. — 9:30 a.m.

SCUP attendees for this session can earn AIA LU 1.0 Unit (SCUPC22C2029) AICP CM 1.0 Unit, and will gain the following key learning outcomes:

1. Identify ways in which a community or technical college might connect with prospective students as part of a nationwide push to train individuals for careers within high-demand sectors.

2. Use your institution’s connections and significance to revitalize the community that surrounds it.

3. Leverage water not as an adversary to avoid but as an associate of the built environment that you can manage, celebrate, and work with.

4. Discuss how to build a sense of community, conviviality, and pride within a student population that is largely transient and non-traditional by using a straightforward, thoughtful approach to the design of student spaces.
