BNIM Receives 2014 Design Excellence Award

Des Moines, Iowa (November 21, 2014) – BNIM announces that the Phase I design for the Des Moines Community Playhouse received the coveted 2014 American Institute of Architects Kansas City (AIA-KC) Honor Award on Friday, November 14 at the annual Kansas City Design Excellence Awards.

The $2.4 million lobby addition, designed by BNIM’s Des Moines office, was selected from 65 submissions for this year’s annual AIA-KC award program.

“It’s a tiny little project, but it’s not about size, it’s about resources,” said Juror Julie Eizenberg of Koning Eizenberg in Santa Monica, Ca. “They didn’t try to dress it up. [BNIM] worked with the essential things to make it all sing together.”

The Des Moines Community Playhouse has been a community pillar since 1919, becoming the second largest community theater in the U.S. with more than 55,000 annual attendees. Beyond the award-winning lobby addition, future phases of construction will add a new education wing to the historic structure including classrooms, storage, dressing rooms, administrative offices, green rooms, as well as a complete renovation to the 400-seat main stage theater and mechanics plus additional parking.

“We shaped the design to embrace the client’s commitment to sustainability and building performance,” said Rod Kruse, BNIM Design Principal. “This is a beloved Des Moines landmark, so it was important to provide an enriched visitor experience and improved user comfort so that the Playhouse can thrive for another 100 years.”

Future phases for the Des Moines Community Playhouse, part of a $10 million capital campaign, are in early design stages.
