BNIM Receives 2022 AIA Iowa Impact Award Honor

Iowa architecture firms were recognized at the American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter’s (AIA Iowa) Annual Spring Conference held virtually April 7th & 8th. Over 150 people joined together to honor the recipients of the AIA Iowa Impact Awards celebrating architects, designers, and other collaborators of an architectural project specifically designed to directly benefit social, humanitarian, community or environmental causes.

The 2022 AIA Iowa Impact Award Honor was presented to BNIM Architects for the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center at Drake University. The Tom and Ruth Harkin Center provides a new home for the Harkin Institute on Drake University campus that elevates the experience of all building users and sets a new standard for inclusive and equitable design. The new building embodies the values of The Harkin Institute and promotes understanding of former Sen. Tom Harkin’s work, including the Americans with Disabilities Act. Inclusive design strategies include a two-story ramp as the primary pathway between floors, generous space for improved accessibility and mobility, high-contrast and textural cues for low-vision individuals, and gender-inclusive restrooms.

“This project is everything it stands for, really embracing the strategies of inclusive design. The ramp is delightful and is an icon for the very mission of the building and its organization. Their process of outreach and understanding of the building users was incredibly inspiring, educating all who visit through its design.” AIA Iowa Award Jury
