Miesblock featured in Fall 2020 Issue of Iowa Architect

Miesblock is featured in the Fall 2020 Issue of Iowa Architect Magazine. The article details the materiality and unique facade of Miesblock and shares thoughts on the design from BNIM’s Jeff Shaffer and Kevin Nordmeyer.

Miesblock is a speculative development adjacent to the historic Mies van der Rohe Catholic Pastoral Center, formerly the Home Federal Savings and Loan building constructed in 1962. The original Mies building and new adjacent Miesblock development reside in the urban core of Des Moines, Iowa. The module and dimensions of the original building inform the vertical dimensions and lines of the new structure as well as the rigor and craft of the precast, glass, and metal plate envelope.

Also featured was a BNIM collaboration with PLaN Architecture to develop the design concept for The Gilchrist Learning Center, a free-standing addition to the Sioux City Art Center (SCAC).
