Restoring Urban Fabric through Innovation

Restoring Urban Fabric through Innovation

BNIM was recently awarded the redevelopment of a 3-acre parcel of land at 18th and Troost Avenue in Kansas City, Mo., currently owned by the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA). The 18th Street Innovation Hub is being designed in partnership with JE Dunn — who is also leading the development of the site — and Kevin McGinnis, former Sprint executive and founder of the Sprint Accelerator.

The investment is the first step in a larger vision — the Keystone District — spurring redevelopment along the 18th Street corridor. It will create a vibrant, walkable connection between the currently disjointed areas of the Jazz and the Crossroads Arts Districts, presenting a critical opportunity to overcome decades of division across Troost Avenue caused by cultural and infrastructure barriers. Bringing together fragmented and finite resources to address the needs of the region would provide Kansas City a tremendous opportunity to not only catalyze economic growth, but also continue its presence in the larger national conversation of burgeoning technology hubs. BNIM is thrilled and honored to be a part of the transformation.

"The Keystone District within the 18th Street corridor is an opportunity to connect the dots and bring different disciplines together. It also presents an opportunity to connect an area that for years has been separated; while we can't take back all that history, it's one opportunity to start to address the problems and connect communities east and west. Our focus is really trying to make Kansas City a better place through this project and a better place for our people." —Steve McDowell, FAIA
