FR209 - Rebooting a Classic: American Enterprise Group National Headquarters

April 28, 2017  |  2:00 PM - 3:00 PM  |  Room W307B

Saving great architecture is just as important as making it. American Enterprise Group's corporate headquarters in downtown Des Moines shows how you can rehabilitate mid-century design to remain relevant. The building, designed by SOM's Gordon Bunshaft and featured in Life magazine as "the talk of the Midwest," has won two AIA Honor Awards over its history.

The project is so revered because its rehabilitation required substantial demolition of walls and finishes. However, these were obsessively and elegantly reconstructed to accommodate new systems as well as life safety requirements.
