The Westport Presbyterian Church has been selected to be showcased in Calvin University’s Center Art Gallery exhibition, The Architecture of Prayer, an international survey of the contemporary church and its architecture. The exhibition showcases drawings and travel photography of historic church buildings in dialogue with new projects built between 1999 and the present – contributed by over 40 global architecture firms. Collectively, the highlighted work features some of the most stunning and historic religious buildings from around the world.

The Westport Presbyterian Church, constructed in 1905, stands today with the original stone façade as one of the most notable structures in the heart of Kansas City’s Westport community. In 2011 the building was severely damaged in a fire, destroying much of the Church’s roof, interior structure, and finishes. BNIM led the reconstruction and addition of the Church, restoring much of the existing sanctuary building and tower while creating a complementary contrast to the original Romanesque Revival building. Its intricate stained glass windows, soaring arches, and exterior limestone shell are a testament to the craftsmanship of the time. Westport Presbyterian has served as a place of worship and a source of inspiration for the local community for over a century and its inclusion in the exhibition is a testament to its enduring beauty and significance.

The exhibit will run from February 6th – April 7th and is a must-see for anyone interested in the intersection of architecture, theology, and cultural history. Admission is free and open to the public.
