BNIM is providing architectural services for Metropolitan Community College's (MCC) Blue River Campus. MCC has begun a series of projects that will respond to the closure of their Business Technology Campus and transition campus programs to new locations at MCC - Penn Valley Campus, Troost Campus, or Blue River Campus. BNIM is working with MCC on three projects at Blue River Campus to build out space which will house the following programs: OSHA, CDL, Forklift, Lineman, EMS, Police, Fire, and Facilities. At the MCC - Blue River East Campus, which is currently the College's Precision Driving Track, BNIM is helping design a new building for the programs of OSHA, Lineman, CDL, Forklift and High Bay space for vehicle storage. 

At the outset of the project, the team discovered the East Campus site was located in a 100-year flood plain. This led to the team exploring questions of whether this was the right site for the project and if so, what provisions needed to be taken to ensure resilience in event of future flooding. The team studied options that would help improve the buildings resiliency: the cladding, electrical systems locations, and structural systems were a few of the pieces that were analyzed.

In addition to solving water issues, the team looked at ways to get to net zero energy. They started by evaluating the heating and cooling needs of each programmatic space. Through this study, it was discovered that many of the spaces had a much lower demand than initially anticipated. This led to a significant reduction in the buildings energy use, with the ability to offset the delta using a small solar array for future installation. Without this exploration, the project would have required many more photovoltaics (PVs) panels and subsequently additional structural and electrical infrastructure, making it cost prohibitive.
