North Charleston Point Pavilion

The Point Pavilion is an iconic performance setting in Riverfront Park. The Pavilion, taking reference from the surrounding structures of the former Navy Yard, bridges and woven sea grass baskets indigenous to the region, provides a sun-screen for outdoor performances. The open-air structure allows views to performances both from the park lawn and from the water.

Integrated into the overall plan for Riverfront Park, the Point Pavilion was designed to anchor the park at the intersection of Noisette Creek and Cooper River and serve as a park destination.

The design incorporates polished aluminum panels, or “sails” that are perforated in a woven pattern to provide unique shading and be acoustically transparent. During daylight hours, the perforations are ghosted on the tabby concrete below. In the evening, the sail becomes a negative, reflecting the integrated lighting and allowing the night sky to be seen through the perforations. Day or night, the sail plays with light giving the pavilion a special sense of place within the landscape.
