The renovation of the existing; seven-story Olathe Adult Detention Center to improve and expand the facility as a new hub for centralized intake and booking, serves eighteen outlying municipalities, and county and state law enforcement agencies in the State of Kansas.

The existing 1987 building had experienced masonry problems along with air and water infiltration issues over time and required much needed attention. Renovation improvements include the complete re-cladding of the exterior envelope to replace the existing failing brick and stone masonry enclosure and a major mechanical systems upgrade. A new 31,780 square foot addition expands the first floor to house intake processing, booking, holding, support services, administration functions, and a new sally port structure.

The exterior design for the final facility was highly influenced by the existing context of the site and the prominence of the building in the City of Olathe's downtown government district. Identified goals for the exterior appearance included: the image of law enforcement, permanence, stability and the County's desire to produce a new, bold addition to downtown that symbolizes future technologies in building science for high performance and modern aesthetic.

BNIM provided sustainable design strategy and developed the exterior design, new cladding & roof replacement for the existing tower and new addition as part of the overall project supporting Architect-of-Record, Treanor Architects P.A.
