Kirk Family Y and Winnetonka High School Addition Receive KCBJ 2022 Capstone Awards
The Kirk Family YMCA and Winnetonka High School Addition were recently recognized by the Kansas City Business Journal (KCBJ) with 2022 Capstone Awards. The KCBJ Capstone Awards “honor the top real estate and development projects in the Kansas City area,” and this year’s program recognized 28 projects across the metro. The Kirk Family YMCA received a Capstone Award in the Adaptive Reuse category, and the Winnetonka High School Addition received a Capstone Award in the Architectural Design category.
The Kirk Family YMCA involved the renovation and adaptive reuse the historic Lyric Theatre in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Originally constructed as the Ararat Shrine Temple (c. 1926), the building has contributed to the Kansas City area in a number of ways during its lifetime. Today, the building brings the Y back to the urban core after more than two decades, providing a welcoming and inclusive center for health, fitness, and community. The design restores and retains much of the original character of the 1926 building while bringing a new energy to the spaces and the surrounding district.
North Kansas City School District worked with BNIM to create a modern, welcoming entrance addition and a series of enhanced interior spaces for Winnetonka High School that support connection among the student community and set a new standard in future design initiatives within the School and District. The new addition serves to alleviate the spatial deficiencies while embracing future growth and reflecting Winnetonka pride.
Congratulations to all of the KCBJ 2022 Capstone Awards Honorees!
