Broadway Streetscape
Information
Following work on the Broadway Streetscape Master Plan, the City of Kansas City, Missouri hired BNIM to design select blocks of Broadway Street in the downtown core. The project is a continuation of the demonstration streetscape BNIM designed on a 7-block stretch of 12th Street. The project creates a pedestrian-friendly environment with a brick paver amenity zone that ties the character of the new street to that of the existing streetscape. A low-maintenance and drought-tolerant planting palette replaces tree grates, and all plant materials are native or xeric plants, eliminating the need for a permanent irrigation system.
The project overcomes a common hurdle in urban streetscapes plagued with subterranean vaults by accommodating large, urban trees via a soil trench that runs the length of each block that will sustain 100-year-old trees.
