The International Coffee Building sits atop the bank of the Buffalo Bayou at Allen’s Landing, a site linked to the roots of Houston’s early history. The Buffalo Bayou Partnership (BBP), a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing this natural resource, is leading the renovation of the 1910 building with BNIM and Lake|Flato. The renovation plans for the International Coffee Building respect the special history of the location and give the three-story building a second life.
The goal of this project is to create opportunities for the public to access and enjoy the Buffalo Bayou and the surrounding natural environment. To achieve this, the International Coffee Building is programmed to include multiple uses. The plaza level offers kayak and bike rental with access to the bayou and adjacent trail system. Office space on the first floor will act as BBP’s future offices. The second floor is designed to be open and to accommodate conferencing, events and gatherings. This flexible space works in conjunction with the rooftop terrace, which offers views of downtown. The design includes the addition of an exterior walkway, protruding from the first floor, which addresses the bayou directly and provides views overlooking the water. A dramatic lighting concept illuminates the International Coffee Building as a visible landmark and destination for Houstonians.
