The Makers Quarter Coliseum—located on the southwest corner of E and 15th Streets—has quickly become the focal point of Makers Quarter, a six-block work/live/play district in San Diego’s East Village. Housed within the former Coliseum Athletic Club, an iconic boxing venue from the 1920s, the building was noted for giving many well-known boxers their initial debut into their careers. The club closed its doors in the 1970s, and was later used as a furniture warehouse for several years. The long-vacant building has now been transformed into a dining and entertainment concept that combines classic games with craft food and beverages.

The 23,500-sf, two-story complex—nestled in Block C of Makers Quarter—seats up to 1,000 people for dining, drinks and entertainment. BNIM worked closely with the city of San Diego historic resource board to coordinate renovation efforts. The primary exterior facade was kept intact, including the historic windows and openings. On the interior, the historic nominal T&G wood decking roof was preserved and rehabilitated in areas needing repair. The Coliseum renovation remains an integral part of the Makes Quarter Master Plan.
