The transformation of existing library space in Moffitt Library creates a hub for undergraduate students and re-positions the library as a contemporary center for discovery and innovation.

Moffitt Library Renovation

Information

The University of California, Berkeley is transforming Moffitt Library – a concrete brutalist structure completed in 1970 — to meet the emerging needs of undergraduate students. The purpose of the renovation is to establish a student-centered launchpad for discovery, where students can learn, collaborate, make, and reflect. The project creates a range of open and quiet study spaces, collaborative learning, social, and event functions. A re-envisioned entry welcomes students and visitors through a new art and exhibit space. The library is scheduled for re-opening for the Fall 2026 semester. This existing building also required a seismic retrofit, which BNIM completed as the Phase 1 portion of work.

Bringing students together to learn, create, and connect, the renovation of floors 1 –3 will capitalize and improve on the foundations presented by the work completed previously on floors 4 and 5 to create a flexible yet culturally and aesthetically harmonized facility. As technology and the nature of pedagogy have evolved, Moffitt Library will continue to be a space that serves the campus community long into the future.
