2022 IIDA MADA Awards: Design as an Act of Kindness

BNIM was honored to attend the 2022 IIDA MADA biennial award ceremony on October 21, in Kansas City, MO, and to receive design honors for the Kirk Family YMCA and MidAmerican Energy Corporate Office and Conference Center Renovation.

The Kirk Family YMCA was recognized with the Best of Show Awards and Gold Award in Renovation & Restoration.

BNIM worked with the YMCA of Greater Kansas City to renovate and adaptively reuse the historic Lyric Theatre in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, as the Kirk Family YMCA. Bringing the Y back to the urban core after more than two decades, the Kirk Family YMCA is a welcoming and inclusive community resource and health and fitness center. The design restores and retains the original character of the 1926 building façade and lobby while bringing renewed energy and purpose to the buildng's spaces and the surrounding district. The jury commentated on the renovation, noting its beautiful program layout, respect of the existing building and assertion of new into the old, and the design as an act of kindness and generosity to building users.

The MidAmerican Energy Corporate Office and Conference Center was recognized with a Silver Award in the Corporate, Large design category.

The Corporate Office and Conference Center transformed a large warehouse structure into a vibrant environment of workspaces and amenities that promote productivity and wellness. With the client’s goals to create an office environment that offered more collaborative, healthy, and flexible spaces for employees, the design team worked to maximize the potential of the existing office space through reorganization, modernization, and human-purposed design strategies.
