UC Berkeley Students Return to a Transformed Moffitt Library
UC Berkeley students return to a transformed Moffitt Library with the completion of the Carol T. Christ Center for Connected Learning. Three renovated floors reimagine what a brutalist 1970s building can offer a new generation of undergraduates.
The project expands a well-established, student-centered facility with more than 750 additional seats for student study, new scholar-in-residence spaces, a new student lounge, and updated building systems, technology, security, and life safety upgrades. A re-envisioned entry welcomes students and visitors through a new art exhibit space and access to an expanded Free Speech Movement Café.
Bringing students together to learn, create, and connect, the renovation of floors 1–3 builds on the foundation set by previous work on floors 4 and 5, creating a flexible facility that is culturally and aesthetically harmonized. As technology and pedagogy continue to evolve, Moffitt Library will remain a space that serves the campus community long into the future.
UC Berkeley recently marked the reopening with a dedication celebration attended by alumni, faculty, donors, campus leadership, students, and project partners. Remarks throughout the event reflected the University’s appreciation for the project team, including recognition of BNIM’s contribution to a learning environment guided by ideas of long life, loose fit, connection to nature, and biophilia. The celebration underscored the shared commitment behind the project and the client’s pride in a more open, welcoming, and enduring resource for Berkeley students.
